From Connection to Confidence: PAYA’s First Supported Event in Palau
On 27 December 2025, young people from across Ollei, Ngarchelong came together for the BHA Learning Cookout, an initiative delivered by Amber Holly Osima and supported by the Pacific-Australia Youth Association (PAYA). The event marked PAYA’s first supported activity in Palau and brought together over 45 participants aged 17 and under.
At its core, the program focused on emotional intelligence, but its impact extended beyond a single theme. The Learning Cookout created a space where young people felt comfortable engaging with one another, building new friendships and stepping outside their usual environments. Participants came from three different villages, offering a valuable opportunity for connection across communities.
The design of the program was intentionally practical. Through six interactive activities, participants explored how to express themselves more confidently, work with others and challenge themselves in unfamiliar situations. The approach encouraged participation rather than observation, which contributed to strong engagement throughout the day.
According to the After Action Report, the program surpassed its expected attendance and supported participants to expand their social circles while strengthening relationships between stakeholders . It also contributed to broader outcomes in youth leadership and community awareness. By creating a safe and supportive environment, the event enabled young people to build confidence and support one another, while linking to ongoing efforts in human trafficking prevention .
The event was delivered in partnership with local stakeholders, including the Bureau of Public Safety, Division of Juvenile Justice, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Bai Derbei and Ollei Port. It was further supported by O.N.E. LEEP, Ollei Youth, Southwest Parents and individual donors, with a range of in-kind contributions helping to deliver the program. PAYA was pleased to be a key sponsor as the region’s leading youth NGO.
This initiative reflects PAYA’s broader approach to working across the Pacific, supporting locally led activities that respond to community needs while building practical leadership skills among young people. Amber’s delivery of the Learning Cookout demonstrates the value of this model in practice, with strong engagement and clear outcomes achieved through a community-driven format.
As PAYA continues to expand its presence in the region, this event represents an important first step in Palau. It shows what can be achieved when local leadership is supported, partnerships are prioritised and young people are given the opportunity to engage in meaningful ways.
