Learning from Elections to Strengthen Democracy in Nauru
PAYA was honoured to participate in the 2025 Elections Lessons Learnt and Reform Planning Workshop, held in Nadi, Fiji, from 13–21 April 2026. The workshop brought together representatives from the Nauru Electoral Commission (NEC), the Fijian Elections Office (FEO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and regional electoral experts to reflect on the administration of the 2025 General Election and identify practical reforms for future electoral processes.
The workshop highlighted that credible elections are built through continuous planning, collaboration, and learning—not just on polling day. Discussions explored every stage of the electoral cycle, from voter registration and civic education to polling operations, vote counting, results management, and legal reform. These reflections reinforced the importance of strong institutions, transparent processes, and ongoing evaluation in maintaining public confidence in democratic systems.
A key feature of the workshop was the opportunity for participants to openly discuss both the successes and challenges experienced during the 2025 General Election. Through presentations, panel discussions, and collaborative group sessions, participants examined operational issues such as election planning, staff capacity, voter awareness, logistics, communication, and results management. These discussions produced practical recommendations aimed at strengthening future elections in Nauru.
The workshop also demonstrated the value of regional cooperation. By sharing experiences and technical expertise, electoral practitioners from across the Pacific exchanged practical solutions to common challenges faced by electoral management bodies. This collaboration reinforced the importance of partnerships in strengthening democratic governance and building resilient electoral institutions throughout the region.
For PAYA, participation in the workshop reflected the organisation's ongoing commitment to supporting good governance, democratic participation, and youth engagement across the Pacific. The emphasis placed on inclusive participation—including the active involvement of women, young people, and electoral officials at all levels—aligns closely with PAYA's vision of empowering young leaders to contribute meaningfully to democratic processes and public life.
The workshop concluded with a shared commitment to translating lessons learned into practical reforms, including improvements to electoral procedures, voter engagement, legal frameworks, and institutional capacity. PAYA is grateful to the United Nations Development Programme, the Nauru Electoral Commission, and the Fijian Elections Office for the opportunity to be part of this important regional dialogue and looks forward to continuing to support initiatives that promote transparent, inclusive, and accountable governance across the Pacific.
