Empowering Youth in the Pacific: Solomon Islander Steen Siale's Journey
The Pacific-Australia Youth Association Inc. (PAYA) is incredibly grateful to the Australian High Commission in Honiara for supporting the participation of a young Solomon Islander at our upcoming Youth Leadership Summit (YLS) in Nauru from the 27th to 30th of November 2024. We’re thrilled to introduce Steen Siale, a dedicated member of PAYA and an emerging aviation specialist with a vision for creating positive change in the Pacific. Steen’s story speaks to the power of youth in shaping the future of our region. Here is his journey, vision, and hopes for the Pacific, shared in his own words.
Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to study in Australia?
"My name is Steen Siale, and I grew up in the Solomon Islands, surrounded by the natural beauty and vibrant culture of the Pacific. This environment instilled in me a deep connection to the ocean and my community, which ultimately inspired my journey into maritime studies. I was fortunate to receive a Solomon Islands Government scholarship to study at the Australia Maritime College (AMC) in Tasmania, where I pursued a Bachelor of Applied Science in Maritime Technology Management. AMC is recognized globally, and studying there was life-changing. It opened doors to practical skills, connections with international professionals, and a deep understanding of global maritime safety standards. That experience has shaped not only my career path but also my commitment to improving safety and sustainability in the Pacific."
How has your education influenced your career path so far?
"After my studies, I completed a three-month internship with the Solomon Islands Airports Corporation Ltd. under the Pasifiki HR and Strongim Bisnis Internship Programme, which led to my current role as an aerodrome safety and compliance officer. I work on monitoring compliance with the Civil Aviation Authority and international safety standards. The education I received in Australia has given me the skills and confidence to take on this role, and it's driven me to pursue my career goal of improving aviation safety and contributing to sustainable development in the Solomon Islands."
What motivated you to join PAYA, and what has your experience been like as a member?
"I first came across PAYA through a social media advertisement, and after learning more, I felt a strong alignment with their mission and values. Joining PAYA was a natural step because of my interest in youth leadership and regional cooperation. PAYA stands out to me because it focuses on developing young leaders not just for professional settings but also in character and resilience. Being part of PAYA has connected me with a network of like-minded leaders from the Pacific-Australia region, enriching my own personal growth and expanding my professional horizons."
What are you most looking forward to at the Youth Leadership Summit in Nauru?
"The summit in Nauru is a fantastic opportunity to connect with PAYA members from across the Pacific, and I’m most excited to learn from others and share experiences. I want to bring up the challenges facing young people in the Solomon Islands and explore how the insights from our discussions can benefit both my personal development and my work in aviation safety."
What is your vision for the future of the Pacific-Australia region, particularly regarding youth leadership?
"I envision a future of strong regional cooperation where youth leaders play a pivotal role in sustainable development. Our region faces challenges in economic growth, unemployment, and social equity, and I believe that young leaders can drive meaningful solutions to these issues. The Pacific and Australia are both rich in youth, and it's essential to empower and equip young leaders with the skills they need to make a difference. I see PAYA as playing a big role in nurturing this kind of leadership."
Where do you see your career and contributions to the Solomon Islands heading in the long term?
"Long-term, I want to further develop my expertise in aviation and focus on improving safety and compliance within the Solomon Islands and the broader Pacific region. Training and upskilling local talent are key parts of my vision to empower our communities, enhance tourism, and boost sustainable growth. I also hope to lead initiatives that promote aviation safety and regional collaboration, ultimately contributing to economic growth in the Solomon Islands."
PAYA asked Steen about his advice for young people, and this is what he had to say:
"My advice is that the power to drive change begins with each of us. The challenges we face as islanders can be tough, but they also create opportunities to grow and make an impact. We have the capacity to build a strong future for our communities and for the region, and I would encourage every young Pacific Islander to believe in their potential and to pursue it."
Steen’s story shows the powerful impact that education, passion, and regional collaboration can have on a young leader’s journey. We look forward to seeing how his experience at the Youth Leadership Summit in Nauru will enrich his vision for a thriving Pacific region, driven by youth empowerment and resilience. Thank you once again to the Australian High Commission in Honiara for their sponsorship of Steen’s attendance at the YLS.
