Young Pacific Voices Rising: Reflections from Ta’u Moana, Ta’u Ananahi Workshop in Tahiti

On June 21st, 2025, young people from across French Polynesia gathered at the Assembly of French Polynesia in Papeete for "TA’U MOANA, TA’U ANANAHI" (My Ocean, My Future) – the first workshop organised by the Pacific-Australia Youth Association Inc. (PAYA) in French Polynesia.
The day brought together voices from different walks of life to discuss the future of the ocean, environment, and culture, in the spirit of the Papeete Declaration and in the lead up to the Third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3).
The workshop was opened by PAYA’s Regional Coordinator for Polynesia and our local lead for Tahiti, Miliani Chan Kee Tham, with special remarks from PAYA’s Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Dominic de Moura McCarthy.
Participants heard from inspiring speakers: Coralie Vahinemoea, founder of Archeology&More, who shared her experience conserving heritage on land and under the sea; Jessica Tran (@jss_tran), known as “La biologiste qui zozote”, a marine biologist and science communicator passionate about making science accessible; Nanihi and Oliver Em, local fishers and entrepreneurs who work daily with the ocean; and Tematai Le Gayic, French Polynesian politician and the youngest Member of Parliament ever elected to the French National Assembly, who spoke about youth voice in politics and protecting the Pacific.
After the presentations, young participants took part in interactive workshops where they discussed what they learned, shared personal stories, and presented their ideas for the future of their ocean and communities.

Le 21 juin 2025, des jeunes venus de toute la Polynésie française se sont réunis à l'Assemblée de la Polynésie française à Papeete pour "TA’U MOANA, TA’U ANANAHI" (Mon océan, mon avenir) – le premier atelier organisé par le Pacific-Australia Youth Association Inc. (PAYA) en Polynésie française.
La journée a réuni des voix venues de tous horizons pour réfléchir à l'avenir de l'océan, de l'environnement et de la culture, dans l'esprit de la Déclaration de Papeete et en prélude à la troisième Conférence des Nations Unies sur l'Océan (UNOC3).
L'atelier a été ouvert par le coordinateur régional de PAYA pour la Polynésie et notre responsable local pour Tahiti, Miliani Chan Kee Tham, avec des remarques spéciales du co-fondateur et co-directeur général de PAYA, Dominic de Moura McCarthy.
Les participants ont écouté des interventions inspirantes : Coralie Vahinemoea, fondatrice d'Archeology&More, qui a partagé son expérience en conservation patrimoniale terrestre et sous-marine ; Jessica Tran (@jss_tran), connue comme "La biologiste qui zozote", biologiste marine et communicatrice scientifique passionnée ; Nanihi et Oliver Em, pêcheurs et entrepreneurs locaux ; et Tematai Le Gayic, homme politique polynésien et plus jeune député de l'histoire de l'Assemblée nationale française, qui a parlé de l'engagement des jeunes en politique et de la protection du Pacifique.
Après les présentations, les jeunes ont participé à des ateliers interactifs pour partager leurs réflexions, raconter leurs histoires personnelles et proposer des idées pour l'avenir de leur océan et de leurs communautés.
