PAYA Returns to East New Britain for Third Program

From July 22 to August 1, 2025, Romen Grammar School hosted a transformative two-week teacher training workshop focused on strengthening inclusive education and Integral Human Development (IHD) for early childhood and elementary teachers. The initiative aimed to equip teachers with practical tools and understanding to better support all learners, particularly those with special needs and diverse learning abilities, in under-resourced and rural classrooms across East New Britain Province.

The workshop was divided into two phases. Week 1 delivered theoretical training, covering key topics such as life skills education, inclusive teaching strategies, stages of child development, disability awareness, and safe classroom environments. Teachers engaged in hands-on activities, role plays, and group discussions to explore how communication, empathy, resilience, and emotional support can shape a child's growth. They also learned practical, low-cost strategies for adapting lessons and classrooms to be inclusive, fostering environments where every child, regardless of ability, can thrive.

Week 2 focused on practical application, where teachers demonstrated core teaching skills, including blackboard techniques, lesson delivery, and classroom management. They also delved deeper into identifying child neglect, implementing inclusive practices, and understanding emotional, physical, and cognitive aspects of child development in real-life classroom settings. The training reinforced the critical importance of early childhood development and the long-term impact of nurturing, responsive teaching.

A heartfelt graduation ceremony on August 7 celebrated the accomplishments of the 18 participants. The event included a keynote address by Mr. Henry Wainak, Standing President of the Rabaul Ward and former Education Advisor, who emphasized the importance of empathy and seeing the world through the eyes of a child. The celebration featured cultural dances, musical performances by Romen Grammar School students, and a special cake-cutting ceremony. The event was recorded by Augustine Tomot from Radio East New Britain and broadcast on August 11, reaching wider communities across the province.

This training not only impacted teachers and their future students but also inspired expansion. With a formal proposal submitted to the Rabaul District Education Inspectors, the program has been officially approved to launch its fourth training batch in Kurakakaul Ward. This next phase will include both early childhood teachers and local youth, marking a significant step forward in community-based education empowerment.

Gratitude was extended to Romen Grammar School, its leadership team, PAYA, community volunteers, and media partners who contributed to the success of this initiative. From logistics to emotional support, the collective effort created an empowering learning environment that demonstrated the power of grassroots collaboration.

The workshop stands as a strong example of what’s possible when communities invest in teachers and believe in the potential of every child. It reinforced a united goal: to nurture inclusive, compassionate, and quality education for the future leaders of Papua New Guinea.
