Navigating the Right Direction Beyond 50: Reflections from the PNG Regional Youth Summit
The energy in Port Moresby was electric from the very first day as 20 passionate young leaders from Papua New Guinea and Australia came together for the inaugural PNG Regional Youth Summit, hosted by the Pacific-Australia Youth Association (PAYA).
Held from 14–17 September 2025, under the theme “Navigating the Right Direction Beyond 50”, the four-day event was more than a summit — it was a celebration of leadership, learning, and the spirit of a united Pacific.
Day 1: Opening with Culture and Connection
The summit kicked off with a burst of colour and pride as the Huli traditional dancers led the opening procession, followed by a heartfelt prayer and welcome from the local committee. Delegates listened to inspiring speeches from leaders including Justice Joseph Crowley, General Jerry Singirok (retired), and Ms. Laura Marson from the Australian High Commission.
As the Tolai Libung Cultural Group performed, delegates felt the heartbeat of PNG’s diverse heritage. The evening closed with dinner and networking as participants started to form meaningful friendships.
Day 2: Dialogue, Diplomacy, and Discovery
The second day was all about reflection and growth. A powerful dialogue session featuring Mrs. Julienne Leka-Maliaki, Mr. Julius Loko, and Mrs. Phillie Julai Marai sparked deep conversations about PNG’s journey since independence and the role of youth in shaping the next 50 years.
Next came a highlight for many — Ms. Tahina Booth’s session on Ma Sports Diplomacy. She shared how sport can break barriers, promote gender equality, and create real social impact. “Leadership starts on the field,” she reminded everyone, leaving the room buzzing with ideas.
Later, the String Web activity, led by Mr. Peter Nasale, saw delegates weave a colourful web of connection, symbolising shared responsibility and collective vision.
Next, an impactful health session: Mr. Jameson Yembinaro’s research on youth health risks and Ms. Aileen Zuhukepe’s presentation on mental health, substance abuse, and gender-based violence. Both sessions sparked honest discussions about wellbeing, stigma, and resilience — a reminder that leadership starts with self-awareness and care.
The afternoon turned practical as the Small & Medium Enterprise Corporation (SMEC) led an interactive session on entrepreneurship. Delegates tackled real-world business scenarios, learning how to be job creators, not job seekers.
Day 3: Celebration and Cultural Pride
As PNG marked its 50th Independence Anniversary, delegates joined the morning Flag Raising Ceremony at Independence Hill.
The celebrations continued with a tour of the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery, where participants explored the rich tapestry of Papua New Guinea’s history and art. This was a great opportunity to practically see how far PNG has come in 50 years and put in perspective the rich culture that thrives in this nation.
In the evening, the Independence Networking Dinner brought everyone together once again. This involved the cake cutting ceremony, marking the group's shared connection and hope for the Pacific’s next 50 years.
Day 4: Reflection and the Road Ahead
The final day opened with a motivational talk by Glen Burua, whose powerful words encouraged everyone to dream boldly and stay grounded in purpose. The atmosphere was emotional and inspiring as delegates shared personal stories of growth and connection.
During the reflection activity, participants wrote notes of encouragement to one another — reminders that leadership is a journey best walked together. The summit ended with a heartfelt closing ceremony, certificate presentations, before Co-CEO Dominic de Moura McCarthy closed with a message of gratitude and hope:
“Carry this spirit home with you — because our future depends on the way we lead today.”
